The aquatic fauna of Bidasoa, in a new publication of the LIFE IREKIBAI project
The General Directorate of the Environment presented on December 20, 2018 a new publication, Aquatic Fauna of the Bidasoa Basin, which shows the main animal species linked to the river courses that inhabit that basin. The authors are experts from the Department of Environmental Biology, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Navarra and have collaborated technicians from the Circular Economy and Water Service of the Government of Navarra and the public company Gestión Ambiental de Navarra GAN-NIK. The latter has been precisely in charge of coordinating and editing the guide within the framework of the European LIFE IREKIBAI Open Rivers project: Improving connectivity and habitats in rivers shared by Navarra and Gipuzkoa, in which the Government of Navarra participates.
Know and deepen the fauna associated with the river
The aim of the publication is to be a field guide for people who love nature, as it allows to know and deepen the fauna associated with the river.
In its pages you can find the detail and description in specific files of 23 groups of macroinvertebrates (dragonfly larvae, aquatic beetles, molluscs, crustaceans, etc). The vertebrate chapter includes a total of 45 species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and mammals, species that depend on river courses for survival, either because they live in the water at least in one of the stages of their biological cycle or because its biology is linked to river courses.
Throughout its 200 pages each species has its description, with its distribution data, the detail of its biology and its state of conservation, facilitating its recognition and providing basic information about each of them.
1,000 copies have been published in Spanish and another 1,000 in Basque, and their distribution will take place in the area where the project operates. In addition, its online version can be found on the LIFE IREKIBAI project website: https://www.irekibai.eu/
The presentation of the guide was made during the new meeting of the Monitoring Committee of the public participation process that is being carried out in the Life Irekibai project. This commission is made up of representatives of the local entities of the Cantabrian area of Navarra, Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico, Cederna-Garalur and Regional Executive.
